Stash Tea: Empowering a Better Tomorrow

In the past, tea was a tool for rebellion and sparked wars. Now it’s become a source of quiet and comfort. But not to us. To us, tea is an opportunity. To excite the senses. To surprise your taste buds. With a diverse range of bold flavors and bright colors. Hell, even “normal” flavors have some kind of weird or wonderful twist. No, Stash isn’t a bag of tea. It’s a little bag of crazy. And it’s about time we show it.

1972

Stash Tea is brought to life by two hippies in Portland,
Oregon seeking the taste of a “tea euphoria.”

1980s

Stash Tea expands to tea bag production and their classic flavors are born:
Lemon Ginger, Chai Spice, and more.

commitment to conduct business as a force for good.

2018

Stash Tea embraces a new look that showcases the core of the brand:
bright, bold colors and a focus on delicious ingredients.

2019

New campaign launches with a fun approach that
leans into our premium ingredients and bold flavors.

PROUD TO BE A B CORP

Because our diversity and boldness should not only be in our cup, but in our minds, our community, and our society. While Stash Tea has been committed to these causes for decades, in 2017 we took our commitment to the next level by becoming a certified B Corp.

We’re bringing back tea as a cultural catalyst

Throughout history, the global thirst for tea has sparked wars, sustained revolutions, and it actually helped finance Women’s Suffrage.

Let’s take it back, before the 1911 California election that allowed women to take part in politics.  The women’s suffrage movement had been on the previous year’s ballot and had not passed. So, women doubled down on their efforts. The suffragettes used two tea blends: “Equality Tea” and “Votes for Women”.  They used these tea blends as central figures to bring attention to, and financially support their movement. The popularity of the teas proved to the government that there was support for equality throughout politics. And the rest is literally history.

But today, tea has lost the strength of its vibrant legacy and has become associated with a quiet life lived in soft focus. Stash, on the other hand, believes that tea should be a force for good. To us, tea isn’t meant to just be a moment of calm and cozy after a long day.

What is a B Corp?

B Corp certified companies are part of a global community aiming to redefine success as balancing profit and purpose. We are focused on being a business that acts in the best interest of our people, our partnerships and our planet. While we strive to improve in all facets of our business, we use the five governing pillars of the B Corp Certification to direct our efforts: governance, workers, community, environment, and impact.

We are working towards better overall social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, and we aspire to use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

We know the importance of giving back and supporting the local communities where we do business and where our employees reside. We’re showing up to bring back tea as a cultural catalyst, so whenever possible, we support organizations and events that foster equality and impact the rebels and rulers of the future.

Strengthening our communities

Our community involvement is driven by a desire to make our communities a stronger and more dynamic place to live, work, and conduct business in. We’re firm believers that every little bit counts.

Because of that, the proceeds from our company bottle recycling are donated to REAP. REAP is a year-round multicultural youth leadership program committed to empowering the next wave of leaders. REAP works with students in grades 3rd through 12th, who represent our most at-risk student population.

Recently, Stash Tea participated in the following endeavors supporting local organizations and causes: the Boys and Girls Club of America, Girls On The Run, Raising the Barre, Big Brother Big Sister – Bigs Night Out, and Wise Up Events. We also maintained our longtime support to Providence Cancer Resource Center by donating tea to their cancer patients. Our employees also participated in sponsoring a local community tree planting with Friends of Trees.

As a commitment to equality and inclusivity, we donated 15% of online sales for a week to the NAACP. To support healthcare workers during the pandemic, we donated over 30,000 cups of tea to NYC Health + Hospitals to offer a moment of respite and enjoyment through our teas. We also launched a give-back effort, where we matched your monetary donation to make it go twice as far. Thanks to you, we were able to raise $1,036 for NYC Health + Hospitals.

EMPOWERING A BETTER TOMORROW

As a B Corp, we are committed to redefining success in business. Not only do we want to be the best tea company in the world, we also want to be the best tea company for the world. We want to empower and nurture a better tomorrow. A tomorrow where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. A tomorrow where everyone can become the rebels and rulers of their own lives.

Tea Garden Selection

As so many companies work with overseas businesses, vendors, and suppliers, it’s important that we are doing our part to find reputable partners. As a tea company that gets ingredients from all over the world, we are proud to have a strict code of conduct for all partnerships.

Stash’s parent company Yamamotoyama even created their own tea garden. Farming their own gardens in Brazil allows us to more thoroughly control the quality of our tea production, and lets us hold their gardens to the highest standards.

Sustainable Packaging

In an effort to create more sustainable packaging, we eliminated our plastic overwrap. Our tea boxes are 100% recyclable and printed with vegetable-based inks, our tea bags are compostable, and we never used microplastics in our tea bags. We also increased machine efficiency to allow us to remove the staples from our tea tags.

Another recent initiative involved reducing the amount of paper in our cardboard tea boxes. This cut our paperboard tonnage by 18%, or ~200 tons a year… As much as a blue whale weighs(!).

Renewable Energy & Recycling

Renewable energy is important to us here at Stash Tea. We purchase green power through our local electric utility, Portland General Electric. We also encourage the use of public transportation by subsidizing half the cost of monthly bus passes for our employees.

We reuse and recycle packaging materials, office supplies, printer cartridges, scrap paper, and newspapers. In fact, we began using recycled paper for packing material in our shipping department more than 12 years ago when bubble wrap and foam peanuts were still the industry standard.

*Brushes shoulders off.*

B Corp Certification

B Corp certification is not a one-size-fits-all, and it’s not a one-and-done certification, either. The certifying body B Lab continues to update the scope and measures of the B Corp evaluation. When Stash Tea recertifies every three years, the evaluations become more and more detailed. This ensures that our certification holds up to the most current standards of good business, and keeps us pushing to better ourselves every day.
